Tomatillo Plant
The following outline is tailored to North Texas, zone 8, climate and conditions. Each plant will be affected based on its preference in climate, the time of year, and its supporting growing space. Make any necessary adjustments accordingly.
Soft, loamy soil is preferred. Your plant will love you for it and thrive accordingly. Consult with your local nursery for ideal soils to purchase.
While several fruit and vegetable plants need a considerable amount of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, your plant can succeed with little fertilizer.
This plant will grow best during the Spring into the early Summer. It prefers up to 8 hours of sunlight per day and warm temperatures. While it can be relatively heat tolerant, hot Texas summers can hinder growth.
Water this plant deeply, but not too often. It’s generally drought resistant and will benefit from its roots searching deeper down for water. Gently water at the base of the plant and avoid getting the leaves wet.
Give this plant plenty of room to grow because the stems will spread. Plant deeply. Stakes and twine are effective to direct as needed, to increase airflow by seperation of stems, and for general support.
Tomatillos are ready to harvest when husk begins to brown and split.
